More than 20 million people in the United States were diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD) in 2019, but only 10% of those people received treatment. In 2021, an estimated 107,000 people died from drug overdoses, while an estimated 95,000 people die each year from alcohol-related causes, making it the third leading cause of preventable death in the US.

USC’s Institute of Addiction Sciences (IAS) aims to revolutionize the way we talk about, treat and prevent substance use through a new Master of Addiction Sciences (MAS), the first degree of its kind offered at a major university, combining pharmaceuticals, medicine and social work together. The new program, which recently opened enrollment for fall 2023, is an interdisciplinary curricular partnership between USC’s Alfred E. Mann College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, USC’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck College of Social Work and the Keck School of Medicine. from the USC Department of Population Sciences and Public Health.

“We hope that the students who graduate from our program will be able to elevate the field and truly implement transformative change in the nature of addiction treatment in this country,” said Jennifer Lewis, Suzanne Teaching Associate Professor Dworak-Peck. One bottle turned into several and the marijuana turned into cocaine: “The one I had left for a while,” Lauster said, looking back on those dark days.

He said 2018 was when he came to a time when this changed his life.

“My grandmother, who was very special to me, had just died and could not stop. He was literally out of control. My dad looked at me and said, “Either you have to go get help or you have to go out.”

His third rehab was a success. While it might have been easy to fall back during the pandemic, Lauster tied up his Hoka: “I had already run 5K before,” he said, “So I went out to my neighborhood and did the best I could to drive a mile. “.

One mile turned to five, then 10, and he is now preparing for the biggest stage of a runner.

“My mom had tagged me in a Facebook post about the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation and how they did it so people could run the Boston Marathon. I just submitted my application and got a call. the next day, ”Lauster said.

He runs 16 miles a day to prepare for the big event and hopes to raise $ 10,000 for the youth foundation, a charity that returns children in need.

“I’ve been someone who needed help before,” he said, “And there was a community of people for me, so I feel great to be able to come back.”

Pathways to Recovery is based on the principles of fun established by SecondChancePA. SecondChancePA was established in 2018 by Dreisbach and Blueprints for Addiction Recovery in partnership with twenty-four Lancaster County police departments. The program gives officers additional resources while allowing people to receive treatment and away from the burdensome criminal justice system.

The CRS will help the individual find a bed in an appropriate treatment center immediately at the person’s point of crisis.
