Bittinger, Maryland

Bittinger is an unincorporated community in northeastern Garrett County, Maryland, United States, on the western edge of the Savage River State Forest. It lies along Maryland Route 495 northeast of the city of Oakland, the county seat of Garrett County.[1] Its elevation is 2,690 feet (820 m).[2] Although Bittinger is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 21522.[3] The post office was established in 1885.[4]

The climate in this area has mild differences between highs and lows, and there is adequate rainfall year-round. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Bittinger has a marine west coast climate, abbreviated "Cfb" on climate maps.[5]

Columbia, Maryland

Columbia is a census-designated place in Howard County, Maryland, United States, and is one of the principal cities of the Baltimore metropolitan area. It is a planned community consisting of ten self-contained villages. It began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life. Creator and developer James W. Rouse saw the new community in terms of human values, rather than merely economics and engineering. Opened in 1967, Columbia was intended to not only eliminate the inconveniences of then-current subdivision design, but also eliminate racial, religious and class segregation.[6][citation needed]

Columbia proper consists only of that territory governed by the Columbia Association, but larger areas are included under its name by the U.S. Postal Service and the Census Bureau. These include several other communities which predate Columbia, including Simpsonville, Atholton, and in the case of the census, part of Clarksville. The census-designated place had a population of 99,615 at the 2010 United States Census.[4] It is the second most populous community in Maryland after Baltimore.[8] More recent estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey put the population at approximately 103,467 as of 2015.[5]

Maryland Route 316

Maryland Route 316 (MD 316) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Appleton Road, the highway runs 2.67 miles (4.30 km) from MD 279 in Elkton north to MD 277 near Elk Mills in northeastern Cecil County. MD 316 was constructed in the early 1910s from Elkton to Elk Mills and in early 1920s north of Elk Mills. In the early 1960s, the disjoint northern segment of the highway was transferred to the county and the highway's present southern terminus was established when MD 279 moved to a new alignment north of Elkton in the early 1960s.

MD 316 begins at an intersection with MD 279 (Elkton Road) in Elkton just north of MD 279's crossing of Big Elk Creek. The two-lane highway heads northeast past Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, on either side of which the highway crosses a tributary of Big Elk Creek. MD 316 intersects Belle Hill Road, curves north, and crosses over Interstate 95 (I-95, John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway) without access. The highway passes west of the Cecil County School of Technology and follows the eastern edge of the Elk Mills Quarry to its northern terminus at MD 277 near Elk Mills. MD 277 heads west as Elk Mills Road and east as Fletchwood Road; Appleton Road continues north as a county highway toward Appleton in the northeast corner of Cecil County.[1][2]

The portion of MD 316 between its southern terminus and what is now Belle Hill Road was originally part of MD 279, which continued along Belle Hill Road to its current course.[3] Both the Newark Road and the Barksdale Road, which followed what is now MD 316 north from the Newark Road toward the village of Barksdale north of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O Railroad, now CSX's Philadelphia Subdivision), were planned to be built by the state but were instead constructed by Cecil County with state aid. Work on both 14-foot-wide (4.3 m) macadam roads was underway by 1911, and the Barksdale Road was completed to Elk Mills Road by 1915.[4][5] The Barksdale Road was planned to be extended north through the village of Cowenton in 1917, but those plans were cancelled with the United States' entry into World War I.[6] A disjoint segment of the Barksdale Road was built from the B&O Railroad crossing through Barksdale in 1921 and 1922.[7][8] This 0.53-mile-long (0.85 km) segment was transferred from state to county maintenance through a June 29, 1964, road transfer agreement.[9] The southern terminus of MD 316 was moved to its present location after MD 279 was moved to its present course from Big Elk Creek to Belle Hill Road in 1962.[10][11] MD 316 was resurfaced with bituminous concrete in two segments in 1972 and 1973.[12]

Millington, Maryland

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 642 people, 234 households, and 174 families residing in the town. The population density was 958.2 inhabitants per square mile (370.0/km2). There were 256 housing units at an average density of 382.1 per square mile (147.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 72.0% White, 13.9% African American, 3.0% Asian, 9.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.9% of the population.

William Faulkner

William Cuthbert Faulkner (/ˈfɔːknər/;[1][2] September 25, 1897 – July 6, 1962) was an American writer and Nobel Prize laureate from Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner wrote novels, short stories, a play, poetry, essays, and screenplays. He is primarily known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life.[3]

Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers in American literature generally and Southern literature specifically. Though his work was published as early as 1919, and largely during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner was not widely known until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature, for which he became the only Mississippi-born Nobel winner. Two of his works, A Fable (1954) and his last novel The Reivers (1962), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.[4] In 1998, the Modern Library ranked his 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury sixth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century; also on the list were As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932). Absalom, Absalom! (1936) appears on similar lists. His first published story, "A Rose for Emily", is one of the most famous an American has written.

Born William Cuthbert Falkner in New Albany, Mississippi, William Faulkner was the first of four sons of Murry Cuthbert Falkner (August 17, 1870 – August 7, 1932) and Maud Butler (November 27, 1871 – October 16, 1960).[5] He had three younger brothers: Murry Charles "Jack" Falkner (June 26, 1899 – December 24, 1975), author John Faulkner (September 24, 1901 – March 28, 1963), and Dean Swift Falkner (August 15, 1907 – November 10, 1935).

Soon after his first birthday, his family moved to Ripley, Mississippi, where his father Murry worked as the treasurer for the family-owned Gulf & Chicago Railroad Company. Murry hoped to inherit the railroad from his father, John Wesley Thompson Falkner, but John had little confidence in Murry's ability to run a business and sold it for $75,000. Following the sale of the railroad business, Murry proposed a plan to get a new start for his family by moving to Texas and becoming a rancher. Maud disagreed with this proposition, however, and they moved instead to Oxford, Mississippi, where Murry's father owned several businesses, making it easy for Murry to find work.[6] Thus, four days prior to William's fifth birthday, the Falkner family settled in Oxford, where he lived on and off for the rest of his life.[5][7]

Greensboro, Maryland

Greensboro is a town located on the banks of the Choptank River in Caroline County, Maryland. The population was 1,931 at the 2010 United States Census. The ZIP code is 21639. The primary phone exchange is 482 and the area code is 410. The town is served by Maryland Routes 480 and 313. It may have been named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 1,931 people, 703 households, and 477 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,839.0 inhabitants per square mile (710.0/km2). There were 798 housing units at an average density of 760.0 per square mile (293.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 75.8% White, 13.6% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 1.4% Pacific Islander, 4.0% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.4% of the population.

There were 703 households of which 42.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 18.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.1% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.30.

The median age in the town was 30.2 years. 30% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.2% were from 25 to 44; 19.5% were from 45 to 64; and 9.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 46.5% male and 53.5% female.
